A private sector dialogue towards a net zero, nature-positive future.
The Nature Positive Hub, London Climate Action Week, 26th June 2024 11:30pm-1pm, 11 Cavendish Sq, London, W1
This event brings together a panel of speakers to discuss how the finance sector needs to end portfolio exposure to deforestation and scale finance to nature-positive opportunities. Through first hand accounts from those leading the way towards zero-deforestation portfolios, attendees will gain insights into the mounting risks of inaction, the most impactful strategies, tools and data, and the connectivity between leading investor nature-related initiatives. They will also learn about efforts to create an enabling policy environment, how to best make sense of new standards and regulations, and what is needed from policy-makers to drive more ambitious action. Table discussions will allow practitioners to brainstorm how to overcome the barriers to delivering deforestation-free finance.
The dialogue
The private sector has an incredibly important role to play in meeting climate targets and supporting nature’s recovery. At present, private finance flows that have a direct negative impact on nature are US$5 trillion, 140 times larger than private investments into Nature-based Solutions (NbS). Annual NbS investment to limit climate change to 1.5°C and protect 30% of land and sea by 2030 needs to almost triple from US$200 billion to US$542 billion by 2030.
This event aims to build the discussion ahead of COP16 and COP29 as to what can be achieved from the private sector to accelerate progress toward delivering a net zero, nature positive future.
This dialogue will focus on how to overcome barriers to ensuring financial portfolios are free from deforestation-related activities and will discuss:
Challenges Faced: Lack of action across the sector leading to mounting financially material and systemic climate- and nature-related risks.
Strategies Employed: Sharing successful strategies to formulate policies, use data and tools, engage with companies and clients, and drive change across the real economy.
Impact and Benefits: Demonstrating tangible benefits such as reduced risks, new investment opportunities, and more resilient portfolios.
Future Outlook: Discussing the gap between the state of play versus climate and nature targets, and how connectivity across investor initiatives, emerging disclosure requirements, and legislation and policy, can drive change at scale.
Attendees will have the opportunity to engage directly through a Q&A session and table discussions. This segment will allow for a deeper exploration of the topics discussed and provide attendees with practical insights that they can apply within their own organisations.
This event is subject to the Chatham House rule.
